Wild Realms - Terrestrial Ecoregions

Wild Realms - Volcanic Layer (Holocene Volcanoes)

Reference dataset:

  • Smithsonian Institution, Global Volcanism Program (GVP)
  • WFS layer: GVP-VOTW:Smithsonian_VOTW_Holocene_Volcanoes
  • Global Volcanism Program, 2025. [Database] Volcanoes of the World (v. 5.3.4; 31 Dec 2025). Distributed by Smithsonian Institution, compiled by Venzke, E. https://doi.org/10.5479/si.GVP.VOTW5-2025.5.3 (data read from the WFS service on 11 March 2026).

Usage note:

  • This dataset is used to build a local volcanic-geothermal biome overlay for selected countries in Wild Realms.
  • Volcano points are technically transformed into support polygons for web visualization.

Changes Applied by Mind the Journey

For platform use, original data may be transformed through:

  • geographic format conversion;
  • geometry simplification for web performance;
  • enlargement of islands and small territories to make them visible on the globe;
  • internal thematic regrouping (realms/biomes) for WR rendering;
  • integration with filters and editorial content.

When these transformations are applied, we keep the original source and its license attribution.

2D map

  • Base map: © Mapbox, © OpenStreetMap contributors.
  • OpenStreetMap data is available under the Open Database License (ODbL). Attribution is also shown on the map.

Boundaries and subdivisions

  • Country boundaries and many subdivisions: Natural Earth, public domain.
  • Regions of France and Spain: geoBoundaries, Etalab Open License 2.0 for France (IGN-F data, 2022) and CC BY 4.0 for Spain (Instituto Geográfico Nacional data, 2017), in the simplified version distributed by geoBoundaries, with the format conversion described in "Changes Applied by Mind the Journey". For display on the globe, Mind the Journey shows the Canary Islands, the Balearic Islands, Ceuta and Melilla as separate features and enlarges their geometries to make them visible, which alters the local scale of the representation. Runfola, D. et al. (2020), geoBoundaries: A global database of political administrative boundaries, PLoS ONE 15(4): e0231866.
  • Italian regions and provinces: for the provinces, openpolis, "geojson-italy", version of June 6, 2023, from ISTAT boundaries, CC BY 4.0 license; for the regions, the example file of leaflet-geojson-selector, © 2016 Stefano Cudini, MIT License as declared by the repository, with geometries that probably come from ISTAT.

Living Traditions - Cultural areas

  • The cultural areas are adapted from the Glottography "asher2007world" dataset (The Glottography Consortium, 2026, v2.0, DOI 10.5281/zenodo.18613195), licensed under CC BY 4.0.
  • The dataset is derived from R. E. Asher and C. J. Moseley (eds.), Atlas of the World's Languages, 2nd edn, Routledge, 2007.
  • Mind the Journey clipped the areas by country and grouped them into cultural zones.

Practical information

  • Emergency numbers: for most countries, GOV.UK, Foreign travel advice. Contains public sector information licensed under the Open Government Licence v3.0. The source and date are shown next to the numbers.
  • Risk, health, entry and visas: links to the official pages of Viaggiare Sicuri (Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation) and GOV.UK.
  • Coordinates and official websites of some places: Wikidata, CC0 data.

Icons and flags

  • Icons: Tabler Icons, version 2.47.0, © 2020-2023 Paweł Kuna, MIT License.
